ABB launches the plug-and-play LV Titanium VSM variable speed drive

ABB’s newly launched LV Titanium VSM variable speed drive combines the advantages of high-efficiency motor and variable speed drive technologies into a single, compact, customizable, plug-and-play solution, enabling customers to minimize energy consumption, save costs, and reduce carbon emissions.

The LV Titanium VSM, with its ultra-high IE5 energy efficiency, offers simple, economical, and efficient operation, empowering applications such as pumps and compressors. As a high-efficiency permanent magnet upgrade for existing direct-on-line (DOL) induction motors, this variable frequency motor offers customers an easy upgrade path, shortening payback periods and achieving a rapid return on investment.

The innovative LV Titanium VSM series is far more than a simple combination of an inverter and a motor. Rather, as a fully integrated concept, the LV Titanium VSM’s advanced drive module is designed to maximize the performance of high-efficiency permanent magnet motors. Its streamlined design allows the drive module to be mounted at the end of the motor, saving space and making it ideal for applications such as vertical pumps. Furthermore, the LV Titanium VSM operates very quietly.

Another advantage of the LV Titanium VSM is its wide speed range and high torque output at low speeds.

“Plug and Play” means the LV Titanium VSM requires no commissioning, as the fully integrated motor and drive are factory-commissioned and optimized. Installation is quick and easy, eliminating the need for a cabinet, electrical room, or specially trained personnel.

The LV Titanium VSM features an intuitive control panel with user-friendly analog and digital inputs and outputs (I/O) and a streamlined built-in PLC. Connectivity options include Modbus RTU communication protocol, enabling easy integration with PLCs and other control devices.

Due to its compact design and high power density, this variable-speed motor is at least two frames smaller than comparable induction motors, making it ideal for installations with limited space, such as upgrading older, less efficient motors.

A key advantage of IE5 variable-speed motors is that the LV Titanium VSM offers significant potential for energy savings compared to traditional, standalone fixed-speed motors. For example, in a 7.5 kW centrifugal pump application in China, the LV Titanium VSM can save customers over 12,000 RMB annually in electricity bills and reduce CO2 emissions by 14,000 kg annually.

LV The Titanium VSM variable speed drive is currently available in sizes starting at 1.5 kW and will be expanded to applications up to 30 kW. It is suitable for a wide range of industrial applications, from water treatment and chemical processing to food and beverage. In addition to being available from stock, the motor can also be customized to meet specific customer requirements.
